Bolivia Program
Our chapter worked with various communities in Northern Potosí of Bolivia (approximately 100 km southeast of Cochabamba) on three main types of projects: roofs and stoves, water, and roads improvement. The Bolivia program lasted from 2006 until 2010. However, due to political events and extenuating circumstances the project was terminated early.
Roofs and Stoves: The primary goal of the Roofs and Stoves project was to improve the health of women and children by reducing indoor air pollution associated with traditional indoor open-pit wood fires, while at the same time reducing the risk of Chagas disease. After its inception in 2007, the Roofs and Stoves project was so well-received that many neighboring communities requested this project for their own communities. New roofs stoves were brought to the communities of Yanayo Grande (2007), Yanayo Chico (2008), Cuerva Pata (2008), Tuquiza (2009), Llut'ara (2009), Piriquina (2010), Sacamba (2010), and Chaucari (2010).
Water Improvement: In 2007, EWB-UWS worked with Yanayo Grande on an irrigation system. In the summer of 2009, Yanayo Grande received a new springboz and associated distribution lines for its drinking water system. Yanayo Chico received an upgrade to its irrigation system, a new irrigation tank, and drinking water distribution system. Finally, in 2010, our chapter returned to Yanayo Chico to complete the drinking water distribution system.
Roads Improvement: The single, 11-kilometer road through five communities (Yanayo Grande, Yanayo Chico, Tuquiza, Cueva Pata, and Llut'ara) suffered from from the steep, erosion-prone slopes, leading to dangerous driving conditions. In September 2008, our chapter worked with these communities to build over 500 meters of retaining walls, 400 meters of diversion channels, and over a dozen stabilized water crossings. Then, In July 2010, the chapter worked with these communities to implement a variety of armored crossings, gabion designs and dry walls throughout the road.
