Nicaragua Program: Tortuga
Our Nicaragua international program is in a community of about 1000 people called Tortuga which is located in the south western province of Rivas near Costa Rica. We started this program in July 2016, and have been working with the community, especially partnering with their Water and Sanitation Committee (CAPS), since. Currently we have 4 active projects in the community relating to water and sanitation needs. Project delivery has been especially difficult in Nicaragua due to an almost 2 year travel ban to due unstable political conditions and now the travel restrictions due to COVID.
Timeline Thus Far
July 2016: We were given the project from nationals and made initial contact with the community and with the NGO.
December 2016: A small travel team composed of 3 students, a translator, and two mentors traveled to Tortuga to build community relations, determine and prioritized future projects, and draft the project partnership agreement.
April 2017: The Project Partnership was signed, officially starting our 5 year commitment to work with the community on sustainable engineering projects. Additionally, our Alternative Analysis for two projects (Western Expansion and NE Solar) were completed and in the approval process from EWB-USA.
September 2017: A small team traveled to Nicaragua to assess the next project in the community (composting toilets), collect water samples, and walk the community through the specifics of the December implementation.
December 2017: Implementation of Western Expansion project.
December 2019: Implementation of first stage of Composting Toilet Project and Assessment of community wide water supply project
